As a Company of pet owners and animal lovers, not to mention a leading manufacturer of pet food and snacks, we have long been committed to taking steps to ensure continued animal welfare – both in our supply chain and in our own communities.

This commitment was formalized with the publication of our Animal Welfare Policy. A culmination of significant work across multiple teams including supply chain, corporate philanthropy, R&D, legal and sustainability, this Policy was designed to clearly communicate our:

  • Commitment to not conduct or sponsor any harmful animal testing;
  • Expectations for the humane treatment of animals in our supply chain; and
  • Efforts to improve the lives of, and relationships with, pets in the United States and Canada.

Our Constituents Share in our Passion for Animal Welfare

We believe all animals should be treated with care and compassion throughout their lives, and our Animal Welfare Policy provides guidelines that help us ensure this in all aspects of our business.

Animal welfare is important not only to us, but to our constituents as well.

Customers want to work with partners that take animal welfare into consideration in their processes. Consumers want to feel confident in the products they enjoy and that companies they support believe in responsible actions to ensure appropriate animal treatment. And our communities share in our desire to help ensure pets have access to quality food.

Committed to Continuous Progress

Since the introduction of our Animal Welfare Policy, our employees and partners have driven consistent progress toward this important initiative. Some notable efforts include:

  • Regularly connecting with producers, suppliers, industry associations and other relevant stakeholders to ensure we continue to expand our awareness of farm animal health and adapt our practices in ways that improve farm animal welfare in our supply chains.
  • Establishing a working group that meets multiple times each quarter to discuss ongoing animal welfare improvement efforts and opportunities for further enhancement.
  • Maintaining a commitment to identify the needs of pets in the communities we live and work and evaluate opportunities to support these through strategic partners.

This work has resulted in some important results, including:

  • The achievement of our goal to source 100% cage-free liquid eggs for our consumer foods production and introducing a commitment to source 100% cage-free dried eggs for our pet food products by 2025.
  • Providing more than $56 million in donations to animal charities and other organizations that do good for animals through the Rachael Ray Foundation and its predecessor entity, and donating over 17 million meals to pets through our partnership with Rescue Bank.
  • A new partnership with North Shore Animal League America, the world’s largest no-kill pet rescue and adoption organization, to become their primary feeding partner.
  • Achievements in transparency in our own supply chain and the introduction of updated partner questionnaires to identify opportunities for further enhancement.

Thank you to all who have influenced our Animal Welfare Policy to date, and to those at Smucker who continue to push for progress that supports the animals and pets that mean so much to our business and our families.
