Enhancing How We Address Sustainability Issues in the Coffee Supply Chain Through Partnership With Enveritas

As part of our continued efforts to support a strong coffee supply chain, we are excited to announce a partnership with Enveritas, an independent third-party global non-profit that tracks social, economic and environmental impact across multiple crops and industries, to help us better understand and address sustainability conditions in select coffee producing regions.

The coffee supply chain is unique. As opposed to many other commodities, green coffee is not generally produced by farmers who work in groups or cooperatives but by smallholder farmers who work individually. Because of this, it has traditionally been more challenging to have visibility to sustainability conditions.

To address this, Enveritas developed a global sustainability assessment system that leverages a combination of both technical analysis and more traditional farm surveys. This work begins with a satellite evaluation of regions to identify coffee producing farms. From there, Enveritas visits a random sample of farms and evaluates these for key sustainability issues.

Through our partnership, the organization has audited several coffee producing regions and provided guidance on key challenges faced. With this reporting from Enveritas, we will be working with suppliers on specific areas of opportunity and will collaborate to develop targeted mitigation plans.
